| Bio: | Nicolas Charles was born Nicolo Caravalli on January 7, 1495, to Giovanni and Emilia Caravalli, in the small village of Lucca, beside the beautiful lake Massaciuccoli, in the Tuscan countryside, the same village where one day composer Giacomo Puccini would be born. He was born at a turbulent time - after the end of the time of spirited freedom that marked the Medici reign, to be followed by a new religious fervour, not to mention that this was the time of the Hapsburg-Valois wars, when Italy was a pawn to be fought over by the other European nations. Nicolo's parents were simple peasants who worked the vineyards for one of the local barones. And became ultra conservative because they were afraid to do otherwise. But beneath the surface, they raised their son to have an appreciation of the finer arts - the more sensual arts. And he learned to hide his feelings as well from those around him. When he was twelve, he came across a troupe of strolling players who were passing through the region in search of greener pastures and he became enamoured with their apparent glamorous way of life - which was a stark contrast to the poverty of his own. So enamoured that at the age of 13 he ran away to Venice - and to hopefully make his own way in the theatrical world. At first he lived on the streets and did what he had to in order to survive, but he was fortunate enough to be spotted by a member of a local troupe who took the lad under his wing and he then became apprenticed to them, doing whatever little things needed to be done, and at the same time learning what they had to teach - juggling, acting, singing, anything and everything. In 1532, a mere 15 years after Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses on the door of the church at Wurttemberg, Nicolo caught the eye of a doughy German heiress, Henrietta, who was married to a pasty faced Spaniard named Alfonso, who was actually gay and made no objection to his wife's taking lovers as long as she left him alone. She became enamoured of the handsome actor and decided to make him a kept man - which, of course he had no objection to. Much as he loved acting, being a gigolo was easier and paid better. So he said farewell to Italy and followed Henrietta and Alfonso across the continent. As they passed through Henrietta's homeland, she introduced him to Thomas Cranmer, who at that time was acting as ambassador to the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. From there they made their leisurely way across Europe, ending up in Barcelona and from there they embarked on a course for England. But Alfonso, unfortunately, did not finish the journey, dying mysteriously en route. He was buried at sea with appropriate sadness but little pomp and circumstance, and when Henrietta and Nicolo reached London, they were wed with all possible dispatch. There they settled down to married life, although Nicolo was never one for fidelity - and Englishwomen were so ripe for the picking. He made a name for himself as a charmer and a bon vivant, and the two of them were invited to court where they discovered to their delight that Cranmer was now Archbishop of Canterbury. Nicolo now cut a swath through the ladies of the court, and Henrietta could do little but fume, for in this country, males had all the rights. And Nicolo, although he missed acting, was having the time of his life... ...up until the time that he fell under the notice of Queen Anne Boleyn. And when she saw him, she wanted him. And would not take no for an answer. Not that Nicolo wanted to say no. So he agreed to a moonlight tryst in the palace at Greenwich which had once belonged to Anne's old enemy, Cardinal Wolsey. And where he got a very sharp surprise - when Anne turned out to be none other than a vampiress, and she turned him then and there. It was small wonder, once her husband discovered her true nature, that she was beheaded a mere year later. But it was too late for Nicolo - a vampire he was and a vampire he would stay. But there were advantages to his new condition, as he quickly found out. One of which was that he managed to completely terrorize his wife. Not that he didn't have the upperhand before. But now she was positively and unconditionally under his thumb. And he used that to his advantage -feeding from her when he was too lazy to seek fresh blood. And forcing her to bring him victimes. Ah, life was good indeed. But with time, Henriette died, as all mortal people do, and Nicolo returned to his first love - acting. He joined an established troupe of actors - the Queen's Regency Players - under the auspices of Queen Elizabeth I, who was his old mentor, Archbishop Cranmer's goddaughter. The manager of the troupe was one Jason St. Claire - and the two hit it off well. Nic shone as the male lead - and in his spare time, he romped with the ladies of London, and feasted on their willing necks. Which he is still doing at the present time. Hey, when you're good at something, why change? Nic - who over the years has gone under such names as Nicolas Fleming, Nick James and Nicholas Nickleby, stands about 6 foot 1 with brown hair and baby blue eyes. He has an award winning smile, and an actor's temperament - and tends to exaggerate a great deal to make a point. And he's lived in England so long, he bears no trace of his original accent. And on the other hand, he does all manner of accents beautifully. | ||||||||||
